  • Overview: All-rounders give you two ways to score in every match, which is why smart fantasy managers build their teams around them instead of treating them as filler....

Every fantasy cricket guide mentions all-rounders, but few explain why they matter so much. The reason is simple arithmetic: a batter can only score with the bat, and a bowler can only score with the ball, while a genuine all-rounder can score with both. That second chance matters enormously over a long season, because cricket is a game of failures. Even good batters fail often, and even good bowlers go wicketless. An all-rounder survives one failure because the other skill is still in play, and that resilience is what keeps your weekly score stable.

Think of an all-rounder as insurance built into your eleven. If your specialist opener is dismissed early, that pick is finished for the match. If your all-rounder is dismissed early, they still have overs to bowl, and those overs can produce wickets, maidens, or economy points depending on your format's scoring. The reverse is also true: a wicketless bowling spell still leaves a batting innings to come. This safety net is most valuable in formats where points come from many small contributions rather than one huge performance, because it raises your floor in almost every match.

Labels can mislead. Some players are listed as all-rounders but rarely bowl, or bat so low that they seldom face enough balls to matter. Before picking one, check the actual role: does this player bat in the top seven and bowl regularly, or is one skill mostly theoretical? A batting all-rounder who bowls two overs a match is really a batter with a bonus, while a bowling all-rounder who bats at number nine is really a bowler with a lottery ticket. The players worth paying a premium for are the ones whose team genuinely depends on both skills, match after match.

Most fantasy formats let you pick several all-rounders, and many experienced managers use three or four of them as the core of the team. That does not mean filling every slot with one. You still need specialist openers for batting volume and specialist bowlers for wicket-taking, especially on pitches that favour one discipline. A useful rule is to anchor your team with two strong all-rounders, add a third if the conditions suit both skills, and spend the remaining budget on specialists in the roles the match is likely to reward. Balance beats stacking every time.

All-rounders are also the most reliable captain and vice-captain options, for exactly the same reason they are good picks: two routes to points. A captain who can score with bat and ball is less likely to post a disastrous score than a single-skill captain, which makes them ideal for small leagues and head-to-head contests. In grand leagues, a lower-owned all-rounder with a strong recent role can be the difference between a good rank and a great one. If you are unsure who to captain, an in-form all-rounder batting in the top six is rarely a bad answer.

Roles change during a season, and fantasy labels change more slowly. A player promoted to opener suddenly gains batting volume, while a bowler moved to first change or given death overs gains wicket chances. Equally, a player returning from injury may bowl fewer overs, or a team reshuffle may push a batting all-rounder down the order. Check team news and recent matches, not just the category label, before paying a premium. The managers who profit from all-rounders are the ones who notice role changes a week before everyone else does.

All-rounders win fantasy leagues because they fail less catastrophically than specialists and succeed in more ways. Pick the ones with genuine two-skill roles, build your core around two or three of them, and use them as your safest captaincy options. Treat the label with suspicion and the role with respect, and your team will be steadier in bad weeks and dangerous in good ones.
