Death-Overs Bowlers: The Most Underrated Fantasy Cricket Picks
⚡ Executive Brief & Key Takeaways
  • Primary Signal: Death-Overs Bowlers: The Most Underrated Fantasy Cricket Picks
  • Overview: The last four overs of an innings produce wickets, pressure and bonus points. Bowlers trusted with the death overs are fantasy gold that many players undervalue....

The death overs, roughly the last four or five overs of a limited-overs innings, are where batters take the most risks and bowlers take the most wickets. Batters chasing quick runs play aggressive shots, mishits fly to fielders, and yorkers and slower balls produce bowled and leg-before dismissals that carry bonus points. A bowler who bowls two death overs can therefore collect wickets at a rate that a middle-overs bowler rarely matches, and wickets are the single biggest scoring event for bowlers. This is why the identity of a team's death bowlers matters more than the identity of its fifth or sixth bowling option.

Death bowlers also benefit from the structure of fantasy scoring. A wicket is worth far more than a few runs saved, so a death bowler who goes for runs but takes two wickets usually outscores a tidy middle-overs bowler who takes none. Economy bonuses can soften the damage of an expensive over, but they rarely rescue a wicketless spell. When you compare bowlers, ask how many of their overs come at the death, because that single fact predicts wicket opportunity better than overall average or reputation.

Teams do not always use the same death bowlers, so you need to check recent matches rather than assuming from reputation. Look at the last few games and note who bowled the seventeenth, eighteenth, nineteenth and twentieth overs in T20 cricket, or the equivalent closing overs in ODIs. Some teams split death duties between two bowlers, some rely on one specialist, and some change based on matchups, such as using a spinner against a particular batter or saving a fast bowler for a left-hander. The pattern over three or four recent matches is more reliable than any single game, which may have been distorted by an early finish or an injury.

Also consider the match situation that death bowlers face. A bowler defending a small total at the death will be attacked relentlessly, which creates wicket chances but also risks expensive overs. A bowler defending a large total can bowl more freely, since batters must take risks regardless. Both situations produce wickets, but the second is safer for economy points. If you must choose between two death bowlers, prefer the one whose team is more likely to be defending a competitive total, and prefer bowlers with proven yorker and slower-ball skills, since those deliveries produce dismissals rather than just dot balls.

A balanced fantasy team usually includes at least two bowlers with genuine death-over roles, and in high-scoring matches, three can be justified. Pair them with a strike bowler who bowls in the powerplay, since early wickets and late wickets together cover the two phases where dismissals cluster. Avoid filling your bowling slots with middle-overs containment bowlers who rarely take wickets, even if their economy rates look attractive, because fantasy scoring rewards wickets far more than frugality. Containment bowlers have a place when the pitch is slow and low-scoring, but on most modern pitches, wicket-takers win.

Death bowlers also make interesting vice-captain options in larger contests, because their wicket potential gives them a high ceiling even though their floor is lower than a top-order batter's. In small contests, keep them as regular picks and put the multiplier on a safer player. Either way, the habit to build is simple: before every match, write down each team's likely death bowlers from recent games, and make sure your team includes the best of them. Most of your opponents will pick bowlers by name recognition, and the death-overs edge is yours to take.
