Every fantasy cricket platform has its own points table, but the core idea is the same: players earn points for positive contributions and lose points for poor performances. Batting points usually come from runs scored, with bonuses for milestones like a fifty or a century, and extra rewards for boundaries. Bowling points come from wickets, with bonuses for three or more wickets, maiden overs, and sometimes dot balls. Fielding points come from catches, stumpings, and run-outs. Understanding these basics is essential, because a player who contributes in several categories can outscore a specialist who only does one thing well.

Batting points are not just about total runs. Strike rate often matters too, with bonuses for scoring quickly and deductions for very slow innings in limited-overs formats. That means a quick thirty off fifteen balls can sometimes be worth nearly as much as a slower fifty, depending on the platform rules. Boundaries also add points on many platforms, which favours aggressive top-order batters over accumulators who score mainly in singles. Always check whether your platform rewards strike rate and boundaries before you judge a batter by average alone, because the scoring rules change who is valuable.

Bowling points reward wickets most heavily, but economy rate and dot balls can make a big difference as well. A bowler who takes two wickets but concedes heavily may score less than a bowler who takes one wicket very economically and bowls several dot balls. Maiden overs and multi-wicket hauls usually attract bonus points, which is why strike bowlers who bowl in the powerplay and at the death are so prized. A bowler who bowls their full quota in attacking phases has more chances for wickets and bonuses than a bowler used only to contain in the middle overs.

Fielding points are often underestimated, yet they can decide close contests. A brilliant fielder who takes two catches and effects a run-out can add a useful chunk of points without batting or bowling at all. Wicketkeepers benefit most here, since they are involved in almost every dismissal, but athletic outfielders also score regularly. When two players are otherwise equal, the better fielder is the better fantasy pick. Check recent fielding involvement, not just reputation, because some players are placed in busy positions while others patrol quiet areas of the ground.

Captain and vice-captain multipliers sit on top of this whole system, which is why understanding points is so important for those picks. A captain who scores in two disciplines, such as an all-rounder who scores runs and takes wickets, gives you double points from both sources. That is why all-rounders are often the best captain choices: they have two routes to a big score. A specialist batter as captain depends entirely on one innings, while an all-rounder captain can still deliver a useful score even if one discipline fails. The points system rewards versatility, especially under a multiplier.

Negative points are the part many beginners ignore. A batter who scores a duck, a bowler who goes wicketless and expensive, or a player who drops below a strike-rate or economy threshold can lose points. This is why picking a player purely on reputation is risky if they are out of form. A low-risk pick who reliably scores thirty runs or bowls economically may be safer than a boom-or-bust player who either scores a century or a duck. Over a season, avoiding negative scores matters almost as much as chasing big scores, particularly in small leagues where consistency wins.

Different formats change the value of each points category. In T20 cricket, strike rate, boundaries, and death-over wickets matter more, because every ball carries high value. In ODI cricket, sustained batting, middle-over wickets, and economy become more important, since innings build more slowly. In Test fantasy formats, where they exist, patience and long innings are rewarded differently again. Always adjust your reading of the points system to the format you are playing, rather than using the same team logic for every match. A great T20 pick is not automatically a great ODI pick.

Before every match, spend two minutes re-reading your platform's points table for that format. Note the milestone bonuses, the strike-rate and economy thresholds, and the fielding rewards, then build your team around players who can hit several of those triggers. Pick all-rounders and in-form top-order players, favour bowlers with wicket-taking roles, and do not ignore fielding. Once you understand how points are actually earned, you will stop picking on names and start picking on scoring routes, and that shift alone will improve your results noticeably.
