How to Pick All-Rounders in Fantasy Cricket: Why They Score in Both Innings

How to Pick All-Rounders in Fantasy Cricket: Why They Score in Both Innings
⚡ Executive Brief & Key Takeaways
  • Primary Signal: How to Pick All-Rounders in Fantasy Cricket: Why They Score in Both Innings
  • Overview: All-rounders give you two routes to fantasy points in a single match, which is why the best ones are often the highest-value picks in any contest....
  • Verification: Analyzed and compiled by RC11 Fantasy & Cricket editorial monitoring desk.

Every fantasy player loves a big score, but only all-rounders give you two genuine chances to get one in the same match. A specialist batter who fails is done for the day, and a specialist bowler who goes wicketless usually limps to a modest total. An all-rounder, by contrast, can rescue a quiet batting day with two wickets, or turn a wicketless bowling spell into a winning score with a quick thirty. That double exposure is not just a nice bonus; it is the single biggest edge available in team selection, because it halves the number of ways your pick can blank completely.

The maths is straightforward. In a typical fantasy scoring system, a batter earns points for runs, boundaries, and milestones, while a bowler earns for wickets, maidens, and economy. An all-rounder is eligible for both sets of points, plus fielding points on top. A player who scores 25 runs and takes one wicket will often outscore a specialist who makes 40 runs and does nothing else, and will almost always outscore a bowler who takes one wicket and concedes runs freely. You are effectively buying two players for one slot, which frees up budget elsewhere in your eleven.

The second advantage is floor. Fantasy contests are won as much by avoiding zeroes as by landing one huge score. All-rounders rarely post a true zero because they touch the game in multiple phases. Even on a bad day with the bat, they still bowl their full quota in most cases, and even on a bad day with the ball, they still get a chance to bat. That floor matters most in large contests where one blank player can sink an otherwise strong team.

Not every player labelled an all-rounder deserves the tag. The first check is batting position: a player batting at seven or eight will face far fewer balls than one batting at four or five, and in a shortened innings they may not bat at all. The second check is bowling workload: a genuine all-rounder bowls close to their full quota most matches, while a part-timer might bowl two overs one game and none the next. Look at the last five or six matches, not just the season average, because roles change when teams shuffle their line-ups.

Also watch the match-up. An all-rounder who bowls in the powerplay and at the death gets more wicket chances than one who bowls quiet middle overs, and an all-rounder who bats in the top five on a flat pitch has a far higher ceiling than one buried down the order. Venue matters too: on a slow, turning surface, a spin-bowling all-rounder gains value, while on a seaming track a pace-bowling all-rounder who bats in the top six is gold. Pick the all-rounder whose skills match the conditions, not just the biggest name.

A practical structure is to pick two strong all-rounders and make one of them your captain or vice-captain, because the captain's double points apply to both disciplines. If your all-rounder captain scores 30 runs and takes two wickets, the multiplied total can single-handedly carry your team. Avoid the trap of picking four or five mediocre all-rounders just for coverage; two genuine ones plus quality specialists will beat a team full of part-timers who neither bat high enough nor bowl enough.

Finally, check the playing eleven before the deadline. All-rounders are the first players teams rest or shuffle when conditions change, so a late change can turn your premium pick into a non-starter. Keep one eye on the toss and team news, and have a like-for-like backup ready. Done right, all-rounders are the spine of a winning fantasy team in every format.
