In fantasy cricket, your captain and vice-captain are not just two more picks. They are the picks that decide most contests. The captain scores double points and the vice-captain scores one and a half times, which means a good captain choice can lift an average team to the top of a small league, while a bad one can sink even a well-built side. In small leagues, where the field is smaller and the competition is often friends or colleagues, the strategy is different from large grand leagues, and it rewards discipline over risk.

In a grand league with lakhs of entries, you need a differential pick to stand out. In a small league with ten, twenty or fifty entries, you do not. Most of your rivals will pick the obvious captain, and if that player performs, you need to be with them, not against them. Picking a risky captain in a small league is a gamble that only pays off if the popular pick fails. More often, the popular pick delivers, and the gambler falls behind. That does not mean you should always copy the most-picked player blindly. It means your default should be the safest high-ceiling player, and you should only move away from that pick when you have a clear reason.

All-rounders are the natural captain pool in fantasy cricket because they can score points in two disciplines. A batting all-rounder who also bowls a full quota has two chances to deliver points, and a bowling all-rounder who bats in the top order has the same advantage. Even if one discipline fails, the other can rescue the pick. That double chance is exactly what you want when the pick is doubled. When choosing between all-rounders, look at their role, not just their name: an all-rounder who bowls at the death and bats in the top six is more valuable than one who bowls a couple of overs and bats at number eight.

There are times when a pure batter or bowler is the better captain, and recognising those times is what separates good small-league players from average ones. If a pitch is flat and high-scoring, a top-order batter facing a weak bowling attack can outscore any all-rounder. If a pitch helps seamers or spinners and the opposition has a fragile batting line-up, a strike bowler who bowls in the powerplay and at the death can take a match-winning haul. The key is match-up: a batter with a strong record against the opposition's bowlers, or a bowler who has dismissed the opposition's key batters repeatedly, is a strong captain candidate.

The vice-captain is often treated as an afterthought, but in a small league it is your insurance policy. If your captain fails, your vice-captain's one-and-a-half-times multiplier is your best chance to stay competitive. The smart approach is to pick a vice-captain who is different from your captain in style: if your captain is a batter, make your vice-captain a bowler or an all-rounder, so that a single match situation does not sink both picks. It is also worth considering the toss and the match situation before the deadline.

The most common mistake in small leagues is overthinking the captain pick. Players change their captain at the last minute based on a single social media post or a gut feeling, and they regret it when the original pick performs. Another mistake is picking a captain from a team you support, rather than from the team with the better match-up. Loyalty is fine for watching, but fantasy points do not care about your favourite team. Another mistake is ignoring the vice-captain entirely and picking a low-ceiling player there. Your vice-captain should be a player you would be happy to have as captain.

Before every match, run through a short checklist. Is your captain a player with a high ceiling and a safe floor, ideally an all-rounder or a top-order batter in form? Is your vice-captain a different type of player who can rescue you if the captain fails? Have you checked the pitch report, the likely playing elevens and the head-to-head match-ups? If the answer to all three is yes, you have done the work. The rest is up to the players on the field, and that is the part no fantasy strategy can control.
